Difference Between Normal Stress & Serious Anxiety Symptoms in Teens

anxiety symptoms in teensTeenagers can be all over the place. One moment they’re happy, the next they’re yelling at you for telling them to stop texting and look you in the eye. These shifts in mood are common amongst this age group, but sometimes it can be difficult to discern between normal stress and serious anxiety symptoms in teens. Medical Daily recently published an article discussing the ways a parent can identify anxiety symptoms from regular teenage stress.

Differences between normal stress & anxiety disorders

Anxiety disorders are some of the most common disorders across the world. While these are widely dealt with, your teen completely freaking out over an upcoming exam doesn’t always mean they’re struggling with an anxiety disorder.

There’s a difference between “casual” or normal anxiety and anxiety symptoms in teens that can signify an actual disorder. An anxiety disorder often creates an “overwhelming fear and panic that affects how they live their everyday lives.”

Sally Winston, PsyD and co-director of the Anxiety and Stress Disorder Institute of Maryland in Towson, explained, “The distinction between an anxiety disorder and just having normal anxiety is whether your emotions are causing a lot of suffering and dysfunction.”

It’s normal to have a really stressed out moment every now and then, but when it becomes a daily struggle that’s when it becomes a serious issue. Serious anxiety symptoms in teens that you should worry about include:

  • Daily anxious thoughts
  • Fatigue
  • Issues sleeping/eating
  • Panic attacks
  • Overwhelming fear

Any of the above anxiety symptoms in teens can signify the need to seek out a professional for further guidance. Ignoring the issue will not remedy the situation, only professional help will allow your child the full and healthy life they deserve.
